Dead Island Definitive Edition Walkthrough & Review P1

Get to the Lifeguard Tower Mission

Lets start with the basics:

Chapter: 1 – Welcome to the Jungle

Mission Type: Main Story Quest

Objective: Secure the Lifeguard Tower as a new safehouse for survivors

Location: Resort Area, Lifeguard Tower District

Recommended Level: 2–4

Rewards: XP, access to workbench and storage, major story progression

Story Background

After surviving the initial zombie outbreak at the Royal Palms Resort, your character (one of four immune protagonists) helps the group of survivors led by Sinamoi, the lifeguard. The beach hut where the survivors are holed up is not secure or sustainable.

Sinamoi proposes relocating everyone to the Lifeguard Tower, a fortified facility with better communication tools, medical supplies, and defensible space. But it’s currently overrun by the infected.

Your job? Clear it out and make it safe.

Walkthrough: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Prep Before You Leave

  • Make sure to loot the bungalow and grab any weapons (paddles, pipes, wrenches).
  • Repair your gear at the workbench if available.
  • Grab snacks or energy drinks to restore health.

2. Reach the Lifeguard Tower Area

  • Head down the beach toward the marked location on your minimap.
  • You’ll encounter multiple groups of Walkers, the slow zombies.
  • Use your stamina wisely — kick (L1/LB) to knock them down and conserve energy.

3. Fight Through the Entrance

  • The Lifeguard Tower’s front lot is crawling with zombies.
  • Use environmental objects like explosive barrels or propane tanks for crowd control.
  • Headshots with blunt weapons do more damage if aimed correctly.

4. Clear the Ground Floor

  • Enter the building cautiously , a few zombies will ambush you inside.
  • The tight corridors make it easier for zombies to overwhelm you. Backpedal and strike.
  • Search every room for supplies: medkits, energy drinks, and weapons.

5. Power Up the Station (Optional Subtask)

  • You’ll need to restore power to fully activate the tower’s facilities.
  • Flip the switch in the breaker room located inside the tower.

6. Secure the Roof

  • Once the ground level is secure, head up the stairs to the communications center.
  • Take out any straggler infected.
  • Activate the radio equipment to re-establish contact with the outside world.

7. Report Back to Sinamoi

  • Once the area is clear and power is restored, Sinamoi and the others will move into the tower.
  • This officially makes the Lifeguard Tower your new safehouse, with:
    • A storage chest for items
    • A workbench
    • A place to pick up new missions

Mission Impact

“Get to the Lifeguard Tower” is the mission that transitions you from passive survivor to active savior. It opens up the game’s core loop of exploration, questing, and crafting. From here, the world of Banoi Island becomes your playground… and battleground.

Lazarus Rising Mission

Mission Giver: Hank (located at the Lifeguard Tower garage)

Type: Side Quest (Important for unlocking vehicle usage)

Reward: XP + Access to a working vehicle later

Objective: Collect 4 car parts from damaged vehicles nearby

Story Context

Now that you’ve helped the survivors relocate to the Lifeguard Tower, there’s a growing sense of uneasy calm. But food, supplies, and safety aren’t going to come easy.

That’s where Hank, the tower’s resident mechanic, steps in. He’s got an idea , if he can get one of the lifeguard jeeps up and running, you’ll have a serious advantage: mobility. That means faster rescues, safer supply runs, and a way to outrun hordes.

But he’s short on a crucial resource: car parts.

Mission Walkthrough: “Bring Car Parts”

🔧 1. Talk to Hank

Head to the garage level of the Lifeguard Tower. Hank’s working under the hood of a busted truck. He tells you he needs 4 car parts from nearby wrecks.

He doesn’t sugarcoat it. The roads are swarming with infected, and the parts aren’t in neatly labeled boxes.

“There’s a lot of cars in the parking lots along the coast. Just rip the parts out of whatever still looks salvageable.”

2. Locate Wrecked Vehicles

You’ll need to explore the nearby roads and parking areas. Focus on:

  • Scattered wrecks near the beach resort
  • Side roads leading back toward the bungalows
  • Abandoned lots by gas stations or hotels

Look for vehicles with open hoods, these are interactable.

3. How to Collect Car Parts

  • Approach a car with its hood up.
  • Look for the “Press [E] to take car part” prompt.
  • Each car gives one part only.
  • After collecting one, zombies often spawn nearby. be ready!

4. Watch Your Back

This mission isn’t just fetch-and-grab. Expect:

  • Walkers roaming parking lots
  • Sudden ambushes as you loot parts
  • Stamina management as you fight in open areas

Pro tip: Don’t try to gather all 4 parts in one go if you’re low on health or weapons. Grab 2–3, return, heal up, and head out again.

5. Deliver the Parts to Hank

Once you’ve got 4 car parts in your inventory, head back to the Lifeguard Tower and hand them over to Hank.

He’s grateful, and you can already see the wheels turning, literally.

🗨️ “Thanks. I’ll get to work right away. You’ll be ridin’ in no time.”

Mission Reward:

  • A chunk of XP
  • Unlocks future steps toward getting a driveable vehicle
  • Builds Hank’s trust, opening up new garage-related quests

Final Thoughts:

“Bring Car Parts” isn’t flashy, but it’s one of the most important side missions early in the game. It teaches you to scavenge under pressure and rewards you with the promise of something Dead Island’s open world desperately needs: a vehicle.

It also signals the shift from desperate survival to proactive planning. You’re no longer just reacting , you’re preparing.

Mission: Ashes to Ashes

  • Type: Main Story Quest
  • Given By: Sinamoi (at the Lifeguard Tower)
  • Location: Resort area – Gas Station and Surroundings
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Objective: Get gas for the Lifeguard Tower’s backup generators
  • Reward: XP + Progression in main story + Access to energy supply

STORY CONTEXT:

With the Lifeguard Tower now secured, your small group of survivors is starting to settle in , but a secure building means nothing without power. The generator’s running low, and it’s only a matter of time before you’re back in the dark.

Sinamoi, the de facto leader of the group, has a plan: head to a nearby gas station, fill up some fuel canisters, and bring them back.

Simple, right?

Well, not exactly. The roads are clogged with wreckage and the infected aren’t thrilled about you stealing their peace and quiet.

🗨️ “We’re gonna lose all the lights, the air, everything. Get some gas, and do it fast.”, Sinamoi

WALKTHROUGH: STEP-BY-STEP

1. Accept the Mission from Sinamoi

Talk to Sinamoi at the Lifeguard Tower. He’ll explain the need for fuel and direct you to the Gas Station by the western road.

He also hands you empty gas canisters, which will now appear in your inventory (they’re bulky , don’t worry, it’s scripted).

2. Head Toward the Gas Station

Follow your map , you’ll be making your way west, past:

  • Roads littered with abandoned vehicles
  • Small bungalow zones
  • Packs of Walkers and a few Thugs (slow, tanky enemies)

⚠️ Caution: You’ll likely encounter your first Thug-class infected on this route , they’re big, slow, and hit like a truck. Best strategy? Kick, dodge, and hit from behind.

3. Enter the Gas Station

There are two key gas stations in the area:

  • First option (easy access): Small gas station on the edge of the map.
  • Second option (main one): Heavily barricaded station with survivors on the roof.

You’ll need to get to the main gas station, which is locked tight. Go around to the side or back to find a break-in point.

Once inside, you’ll meet a couple of NPC survivors who have taken over the station , and they’re not thrilled to see you.

4. Deal With the Survivors (Non-Violent)

This part adds a little moral flavor. The survivors aren’t enemies , they just don’t want to share. After a tense exchange, they reluctantly agree to let you use the pump , but only once.

So make it count.

5. Fill the Gas Canisters

  • Walk over to the fuel pumps and use the action button to start filling.
  • You’ll need to fill up two canisters.
  • While doing this, zombies begin attacking the gas station.

💡 Pro Tip: Set traps, block entrances, and stay alert while filling the cans , you can still move and fight while holding one.

6. Return to the Lifeguard Tower

The return journey is just as dangerous as the way there:

  • You’ll be slower while carrying fuel
  • You can drop the canisters to fight more effectively
  • Be careful not to throw them into fire or explosive areas, they can explode

Once you return, place the gas cans at the designated drop-off spot near the generator and talk to Sinamoi to complete the quest.

MISSION REWARDS:

  • Solid chunk of XP
  • Progression to the next main story arc
  • The Lifeguard Tower now has full power, unlocking:
    • Communications room access
    • More reliable lighting
    • Radio equipment for incoming transmissions

My Take on This mission:

Ashes to Ashe” is where Dead Island starts flexing its survival horror muscles. It combines exploration, combat, and real consequence. Power is survival , and you’re learning that survival isn’t just about fighting the dead, but negotiating with the living, too.

It’s also the first time the game hints at moral ambiguity. The people hoarding gas aren’t villains , they’re scared. That moral grey zone is what keeps Dead Island interesting, even when the blood’s flying.
